This past week, Substack flew out their creator fellowship writers to New York City for a celebratory party. I was picked for this program, alongside 9 other amazing creators, about 3 months ago.

One of the tricky things about growing a Substack, thus far, has been the fact that it feels so new. It has been around for 7 years now but it was truly for the deep dive authors and journalists. And I can admit my creator journey is maybe a little bit more surface level marketing and pop culture topics. So I only found out about the website a few months ago when the creator program was announced.
But it came at a pivotal time for creators. With the on-going TikTok ban cases and the rising mistrust and depleting income for creators with tentpole platforms, they were hungry for something new.
On top of that, Substack gives you an email list of your followers and let’s you create paid subscription tiers. This gives creators a much more consistent income that isn’t dependent on a changing algorithm and chasing surface level trends for ad revenue.
I am now at 3,700+ subscribers and I am going to dedicate Monday’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve” podcast to giving more in-depth tips and learnings about growing a Substack. But here are a few tidbits I learned from meeting with other Substackers and the Substack team in NYC…
