I truly adore this take. I feel like especially now as someone who is just beginning on social media, I feel a lot of pressure to look at my peers in my niche and check what they're doing, and replicating that. But, as I am creating more now, and as I have established somewhat of a routine for myself, I feel like I am starting to get de-motivated to work on videos. And I realized it's because sometimes I don't always feel that strong pull to create whatever it is I have decided to create, whether a video on YouTube or anything else. So when you say that being unique is key, I couldn't agree more, and this advice really aligns with my newest understanding that what really matters is that I enjoy the work I put out, and the process of creating my work and my videos, and maybe it's time for me to do something a bit different in my videos that I feel inspired to do regardless if others are doing something similar or not. Because authenticity and uniqueness win at the end of the day. And creating something from the intention of love rather than competition is always the best for the creator and their audience! Your timing for posting this was perfect, I really needed it! Thank you so much! Keep up the great work Coco!
“Imitation” of life is social media at its core. That’s why so many are abandoning it. The creators of yesterday are only mad because like the wizard of oz, the curtain has been opened and the sham of the influencer has been revealed. YouTube is a great example of how things have pivoted to small authentic creators and not shenanigans. It’s not on easy mode like many say, but it’s more accessible and relatable than ever before.
Interesting read, I think it only really describes creators that create to get famous though. Is that really the goal? To niche out so much that you can’t be compared to anyone else, seems unrealistic? What do you think?
Thanks for the thought provoking article, really great read Coco!
This is well thought out! I’ve noticed this also. TikTok feels like an Audition stage. Although I found it cringe for most creators simply due to the similar and at times, copy paste of a viral topics/content, this puts it in perfect words on how sticking to a niche stunts evolution of the creator. I also think this is why big creators look to get recognized by the legacy media. Becoming gatekeepers essentially is them trying to protect the niche they created because for a lot of creators on TikTok, the content is essentially just generated.. with little to no soul/authenticity. You nailed it YET AGAIN!

Great and articulate view of " legacy" and it's gatekeeper function.
Thought provoking add on with perspective here from a person who shares an experiential take.
Best to you as you have mastered an important chapter in life.
